Red-shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Red-shouldered Hawk, California subspecies

This woodland species is considered only partially migratory; many populations remain in breeding areas throughout the year. The origin of the birds that move along the Texas coast to winter in Mexico is unclear.

The California sub-species was once considered non-migratory, but the data collected at the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, which monitors birds moving south along the extreme Pacific Coast, suggests otherwise. Most sites that record significant numbers of this species show them to be a relatively late migrant, with numbers peaking from late October to the middle of November.
