Description Adult has white leading edge to wing and dark trailing edge to outer upper wing. Has a dark brown hood in summer, but dark smudges on otherwise white head plumage in winter. Bill and legs are red, duller in winter than summer. First-winter has bands of rufous and black on upper wings, dark tip to tail, and dark-tipped pink bill.

Discussion Mainly Eurasian species that is a rare visitor to northeast and an occasional breeder. Found mainly on coasts, sometimes with Bonaparte's Gulls.
