Description 9" (23 cm). Unmistakable. A large grosbreak with a huge, deep bill. Adult male solid lemon-yellow; black wings and tail boldy patterned with white. Female similar but duller, with streaked upperparts.
Habitat Riparian woodlands; oak woodlands.
Observation Tips Members of this family usually lay 3 or 4 pale blue or green eggs in a cup nest.
Range Native to western Mexico. Straggler to Arizona in summer.
Voice Whistled song similar to that of Black-headed Grosbeak. Call note like that of other grobeaks in its genus.
Discussion This member of the cardinal family lives in Mexico and Guatemala, only occasionally appearing across the U.S. border. Records of Yellow Grosbeaks in more northerly states may be escaped captive birds.
