Description ADULT BREEDING Has maroon plumage overall with metallic green sheen on back and wing coverts. Bill is brownish yellow, face is dark and has narrow white line framing eye, running from base of bill. Legs are dull reddish yellow. ADULT NONBREEDING Less colorful, with pale streaks on head and neck. JUVENILE Recalls nonbreeding adult, but is browner overall.

Habitat Locally fairly common resident of coastal marshes and wetlands from Texas to South Caro_lina; breeding range extends north to New England in summer.

Voice Mostly silent, but nesting birds utter grunting calls.
Discussion Long-legged waterbird with long neck, bulbous head, and long, downcurved bill. Plumage looks colorful in good light. Feeds by probing for aquatic invertebrates. In flight, neck and head are held outstretched, with legs trailing. Sexes are similar.
