Description ADULT Has mostly olive-yellow head, neck, and back. Wings are dark with bold white wing bars. Note the white eyering, pale gray throat, olive-yellow wash on breast, and otherwise whitish underparts. JUVENILE Similar to adult, but with buffy wing bars.

Dimensions Length: 6" (15 cm)

Habitat Common summer visitor (mainly Apr-Aug) to deciduous forests, especially areas near streams and rivers. Winters mainly in Central and South America.

Voice Song is a loud per-Pweep; call is a sharp pweet.

Discussion The most widespread "empid" in eastern and southeastern North America. Feeds by flycatching from mid-level perch, or by gleaning insects from foliage. Compared to other "empids," note its larger size, rather long primary projection, relatively large bill, flat forehead, rather peaked rear crown, and distinctive call and song. Sexes are similar.
