Description ADULT Has gray-brown upperparts and blackish wings and tail with pale gray-buff wing bars and whitish fringes to secondaries and tertials. Underparts are grayish, palest on throat, belly, and undertail. JUVENILE Similar, but wing bars are buffy.

Dimensions Length: 7-7 3/4" (18-20 cm)

Habitat Locally common summer visitor (mainly May-Aug) to wooded canyons, mainly Arizona. Winters in Central America.

Observation Tips Often first detected by hearing song.

Voice Utters a distinctive, upslurred per-Wip and a whistling song per-pay-p'weeo (JosÈ Maria).

Discussion Larger and more uniform than related species; has a distinct crest. Perches near treetop, higher than Western Wood-pewee. Bill is relatively long with orange lower mandible. Sexes are similar.
