Description In bloom, this spiny-hairy plant appears to be a single, white, leafy flower spike, rising from a basal rosette.
Habit: native biennial or perennial herb; thick, erect, hairy stem.
Height: 6-36 in (15-90 cm)
Leaf: in basal rosette, linear, hairy; on stem, becoming smaller above.
Flower: tiny white flowers, 1/4-3/8 in (6-9 mm) wide, 5-lobed; flowerheads spiral around the stem from base to top of plant.
Fruit: 1-4 hard nutlets.
Flower May to July.
Habitat Dry, sunny locations in foothills and mountains: prairies, hillsides, meadows, fields, cliffsides, roadsides; 4500-9300 ft (1400-2800 m).
Range Wyoming and Colorado.
