Description Camouflaged according to habitat. 2 long centre spines. Scales from fringe on either side. Keeled belly scales. Reddish-yellow/gray.
Dimensions 6.3-18.1cm. (2 1/2-7 1/8")
Breeding Breeds April/May. 14-37 eggs, hatch after 6 weeks, 3.1cm (1 1/4") when hatched. Female digs burrow.
Habitat Dry, open country. Grassy, mesquite or cactus plants in loose soil.
Range Kansas through Texas, Arizona. also Louisiana & Florida.
Discussion Diurnal. Common on pet-trade, more than any other 'horned lizard'. Feeds mostly on ants so difficult to keep as a pet, often starve to death when kept as pets.
