Description Brown-grayish. Large head. White underside. 15-16 coastal grooves. usually has golden-yellow spots.
Dimensions 10-18.5cm (4 1/4-7 1.4")
Breeding Breeds spring-summer. Up to 2 dozen eggs laid. Nests in tree hollows. Female guards brood. Hatches after 3-4 months.
Habitat Oak woodland along the coast. Also foothills with black oak.
Range Coastal ranges of California. Also Sierra Nevada through to Santa Catalina.
Discussion One of the climbers. Nocturnal and very hard to catch. Hides in tree cavities during the day. Shares its cavity with dozens of others. Diet consists of various insects and trees. Vocalizes and bites when handled.
