Description Black in color. Triangular head with a slim body. Gray spots cover back. 14-15 coastal grooves.
Dimensions 10-17cm. (4-6 1/2")
Subspecies Speckled has whiteish/yellow spots.
Santa Cruz has white spots.
Breeding Breeds spring-summer. Up to 2 dozen eggs, attached to a shot stalk. Stored in a nest among rocks. Females guard the nest.
Habitat Deciduous forest. In the south they prefer moist woodland.
Range Oregon through to n. California.
Discussion Mostly active throughout the year in southern regions. Returns to surface during rains. Burrows in soil otherwise. Diet consists of small insects.
