Description Broad head with shovel-like snout. Brown to light-brassy brown in color with dark reticulate blotches. 12-13 indistinct coastal grooves. Tail is 40% of total body length.
Dimensions 18-34cm. (7-13cm)
Breeding Breeds in spring. Eggs attached singularly to timber underwater. Larvae hatch when 5/8" in size, neotonic larvae at 8".
Habitat Temperate forests, rivers, freshwater lakes and marshes.
Range British Columbia towards California along the coast.
Discussion Also known as the Coastal Giant Salamander. One of the few Salamander species to vocalise. Lives on land but near water for breeding. Normally under forest vegetation and bushes. Sometimes climb in trees, up to 8 feet high. Diest consists of mice, fish, large insects and garter snakes. Some larvae eat other small larvae as well as tadpoles of Tailed Frogs.
