Description Black in color with green blotches. Underside black or dark brown. Light dots in 2 rows on either side. 14 Coastal grooves.
Dimensions 9-21cm. (3 1/2-8 1/4")
Breeding Breeds June through July. Up to 40 eggs laid singularly under stones in stream bed. Hatches in early fall. Sexually mature after 3 1/2 years.
Habitat Temperate rivers and mountain streams.
Range Virginia through Gerogia. Also in South Caroline.
Discussion Nocturnal. Sometimes basks on rocks. Rarely leaves river/stream banks. Very agile. Leeches are sometimes a problem. Diet consists of insects, snails and other Salamanders.
