Description 7-13" (18-33 cm). Large and stout; head broad; snout rounded. Dark brown or blackish above with many irregular light brown, olive, or yellowish-brown spots or blotches, extending down onto sides. Belly olive-yellow.

Breeding Breeds in early spring in shallow ponds.

Habitat Sandy pine barrens; shallow ponds.

Range Eastern coastal plan from Long Island, New York, south the Florida panhandle and extreme e. Louisiana. Great Lakes states south to Gulf; also e. Texas.

Discussion This salamander is underground most of year, where it lives in mammal and crayfish burrows or under waterside debris. It is a subspecies of the Tiger Salamander.
