Description Large chipmunk with a bushy tail. Head is grayish on top and striped in white on the sides. Back has brown and gray stripes. Striping is less distinguished in winter pelage.

Discussion Overlaps slightly in range with the very similar Merriam’s Chipmunk. Stands on hind feet to give “chip” vocalization. Common in sandy and rocky areas with sparse pinyon pine, juniper, and scrub oak vegetation.
