Marsh Rice Rat Oryzomys palustris

Track In soft mud or dust, hindprint 3/8" (10 mm) long, with 5 toes printing; foreprint slightly smaller, with 4 toes printing. Walking stride, 2" (50 mm), with hindprint directly behind, or slightly overlapping, foreprint. Those of other rice rats are similar.

Sign Extensive runways among marsh vegetation. Feeding platforms made of plants bent over the water, often surrounded by remnants of crabs.
Nest: Grapefruit-size nest of shredded grass and sedges, often in cattails and bulrushes above water line, but sometimes at base of shrub or under debris.
