Description Similar to S. borealis, but with dark brown above and pale gray on underside. Also has six mammae instead of eight, as in S. borealis.

Discussion Active throughout the year, mostly at dawn and dusk, but forages throughout the night and less during the day in the hotter months. They make runways similar to other voles in grassy habitats. Occurs in a wide variety of habitats including clearings in woodlands, grasslands, mixed deciduous/coniferous woodlands, spruce-fir forests, and freshwater wetlands.
