Common Hog-nosed Skunk Conepatus mesoleucus

Track Similar to Striped Skunk's, but toe prints in forefeet are longer, often longer than heel pad. 5 toes print when clear; sometimes claws show. Foreprints 1–1 3/4" (25–44 mm) long, slightly wider. Hindprints 1 1/4 –2" (32–50 mm) long, slightly narrower, broader at front; somewhat flat-footed. Stride 4–6" (100–150 mm). Because skunks shuffle and waddle, tracks are relatively close together, and foreprints and hindprints usually do not overlap. When animal is running, stride is longer, and hindfeet print ahead of forefeet. Trail undulates slightly because of waddling walk.

Sign Extensive patches of ground torn up and pitted by rooting.
Scat: Similar to Striped Skunk's.
