Description Large deciduous tree. Crown dense, elliptical. Bark dark gray-brown to black, deeply grooved with long scales. Leaves three-lobed, with a "droopy" appearance. Flowers yellowish-green, borne on pendulous, hairy clusters 3 to 7 cm. long. Female flowers found mainly in terminal buds; lateral buds usually contain male flowers with few or no female flowers. Fruit horseshoe shaped with two wings.

Diameter: 0.6-0.9 m. (2-3 in.).

Habitat Canyons & valleys, Watersides (fresh).

Range Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Plains, New England, Great Lakes.

Discussion Called Black Sugar Maple, a species of maple closely related to Sugar Maple, and treated as a subspecies by some. Cut and sold with sugar maple as hard maple lumber.
