Description Large evergreen variable in form; straight or crooked. Crown irregular, rounded to conical. Branches spreading, ascending. Bark thin, flaky, black bark that becomes reddish brown with age. Needles short, in bundles of two and three mixed together, 7-11 cm. long. Cones 4-7 cm. long. Scales thin with transverse keel, short sharp prickle.

Diameter: 0.5-0.9 m. (1 1/2-3 ft.).

Habitat Fields, Grasslands & prairies, Mountains, Scrub, shrub & brushlands.

Range Plains, Mid-Atlantic, Texas, Southeast, Florida, Great Lakes.

Discussion Highly valued for timber and pulpwood. Also called Shortleaf pine, shortstraw pine, southern yellow pine.
