Description Large evergreen coniferous tree with a conic crown of spreading branches. Bark thick, fibrous, ridged. Leaves bright green, scale-like 3-14 mm. long. Cones 2-2.5 cm long. Seeds 8-12 mm. long with 2 wings.
Dimensions Height: 18-46 m. (60-150 ft.)
Diameter: 0.9-1.5 m. (3-5 ft.).
Habitat Mountains.
Range Southwest, California, Northwest.
Discussion Wood is soft, moderately decay-resistant, with a strong spicy-resinous fragrance. It is the primary material for wooden pencils because it is soft and tends to sharpen easily without forming splinters.
