Description Grows up to 2' (40-61 cm) in diameter and up to 3' (50-91 cm) high. Trumpet shaped sponges with deep centers and asymmetrical sides. Cup wall thickness does not exceed 1" (3 cm). Surface strongly conulose. Color varies from purple to red to brown.
Habitat Rocks, Ocean or bay shallows, Coral reefs.
Range Florida.
Discussion The Vase Sponge is frequently seen in the company of Ircinia felix and Ircinia strobilina. Of the three, the Vase Sponge is the most rare.
