Description Narrow head and body. Black-brown, with brownish/yellow or reddish band across back. 4 toes on each small foot. 18-22 coastal grooves.
Dimensions 7.6-14cm (3-5 1/2")
Breeding Fall to early winter. Up to 21 eggs laid under rocks or logs. Larvae hatch in spring.
Habitat Foothills and coastal mountain ranges. Also grasslands and redwood forest.
Range Oregon through to California along the coast.
Discussion One of the 'lungless'. Breathes through its skin. Due to its slender build it can burrow through subterranean tunnels easily. This also gives it an advantage when hunting for prey. Diet includes smaller invertebrates and insects.
