Description Native plant, height one to four feet. Palmate leaves. Whitish-green flowers with sepals longer than petals. Green bur-like fruit, split into two seeds. Biennial or perennial. Spreads primarily by seed.
Flower Late spring / early summer, lasting for approximately three weeks.
Habitat Mesic deciduous woodlands.
Range Eastern United States (excluding Maine), extending north into Quebec and Ontario, and west into Texas and Wyoming.
Discussion A threatened species in Massachusets and Vermont. Other common names: sanicle, short-styled snakeroot.
