Mallards will not use man-made shelters of any kind. They nest on the ground and roost on water. Wood ducks are tree ducks, and nest naturally in tree cavities, and therefore, will use a large birdhouse in which to nest. The seven mallards will find natural cover in which to roost and stay out of severe weather. When the water freezes, they may migrate south for the winter.
