fairydiddles

Wildlife observers around here refer to a squirrel they call a fairydiddle. It is described as smaller than the regular grey squirrels with a less bushy tail. The behavior that people mention most is that in territorial fights the animal will castrate its opponent. What kind of squirrel is this?

Wildlife Expert - Ken Burton

"Fairydiddle" is a nickname for the Red Squirrel. The story I've heard is that Red Squirrels, which are quite aggressive and territorial, will try to castrate Eastern Gray Squirrels. This is pure nonsense. Red Squirrels do chase other squirrels and may even nip their rear ends, but castration? Forget it!
