camel Spider

I live in Yuma, AZ, we live on 5 acres pretty much in the middle of the desert. My pest control was out yesterday and said that he found a camel spider. He showed it to us, it was scary!! I can not find any info on these. Can they harm my animals or kids. Thank you for any help. Tina

Camel spiders are more technically known as windscorpions. They're neither spiders nor scorpions; they are in a different arachnid order. Yes, they are scary looking and fast; but, unlike spiders and scorpions, they're not venomous. They do have powerful jaws and can inflict painful bites, but they will not do so unless picked up. There's a wonderful article on them in a recent issue of National Geographic.
