Tree Care

Dear Cathy, We are building a home on 2 1/2 acres, covered with Post Oak trees. We cleared only enough to accommodate the pad for the home, and are concerned about damage to the nearby trees resulting from construction activities. Some trees have already suffered damage to their bark. Can you provide advice on necessary cautions to protect our trees while construction is underway...and the dangers to the trees if care is not taken? Thanks, John & Carol Davidson

Backyard Expert - Cathy Nordstrum

Dear John and Carol,

Run to your nearest bookstore and buy Building Inside Nature's Envelope by Andy Wasowski. A must-read for all Americans moving onto acreage, this book helps you keep control over the building process and protect your trees and other valuable assets. Take photographs of the scarred trees and register the date. You may want to contact an arborist in Denton or Dallas for advice about your injured trees. The best of luck to you.
