butterflies

I find large gatherings of Tiger Swallowtails, male and female--and an occasional smaller butterfly--in the middle of dirt roads. They scatter when I approach, on foot or in the car, and I have found no explanation for this behavior..Can you explain it?

Most such concentrations of butterflies are at sources of water and/or salt. Such sites are often shallow puddles or mud where puddles have been. Urinate in the road and I guarantee you'll see butterflies clustering at the site before long; urine's a great source of water AND salt!
