bird seed sprouting in stones

We just redid the area around our bird feeders, but now the bird seed is sprouting between the river rock. We want to kill it, but don't want to kill or hurt the birds. What can we use? Would appreciate your help.

Backyard Expert - Cathy Nordstrum

Bird seeds sprouting where they are not wanted is a common problem. Since your rocks are rather large, it shouldn't be too difficult to move them to one side and pull the sprouted seeds. Then return the river rocks. If the area is too large to do this easily, spray vinegar on the plants on a sunny day. By nightfall they will have wilted and died. The vinegar will evaporate quickly and will not harm the birds or the soil.
