Do young cardinals lack a tail? We have one adult size female cardinal at our feeder who lacks the long tail feathers of birds of the same size. It seems normal except for that.

Birding Expert - George H. Harrison

There are no baby or juvenile northern cardinals this time of the year. The bird lacking feathers in its tail has lost them somehow. Perhaps she was in the fight with another cardinal, or perhaps escaped a predator, or had an accident of some kind in which she lost her tail feathers. The feathers will grow back.
